Carlos Mortensen Cuts Up The Competition
There is a reason why this person is called El Matador in poker rooms. Carlos Mortensen is a man feared when it comes to poker because of his aggressive style as well as his intensity when he plays. With numerous titles under his belt as well as two bracelets to his name, El Matador strikes fear into the hearts of his opponents. Moreover, even if you just look at his professional poker resume, you would be shaking in fear and awe. For neophytes, one of the scariest things that can happen to them is to face El Matador in a match.
It was as if he just burst out of nowhere in 2001. Although Carlos has had some experience in competing, his win in 2001 was the most impressive. It was in this tournament that he not only won bragging rights, but a World Series of Poker title. Carlos, an unknown name then, went head to head against several big names in poker rooms. Among the players in this tournament were Daniel Negreanu, Mike Sexton, and Dewey Tomko. However, Carlos bested most of them and faced Dewey Tomko in the finals. Many people thought Dewey, who had three WSOP bracelets, would win the tournament but the river gave Carlos a win with a high-straight king. In an instant, Carlos was richer by $1.5 million and won his first WSOP bracelet.
In 2004, he added another feather to his cap as he won the World Poker Tour's Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic. He was the champion of this tournament where he won more than $3 million. This win also saw him with another bracelet as well as the title of the only man who has won the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour. Carlos also won the as a semi-finalist in the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament during its second season.
Then, in 2006, Carlos made it to three final tables of the World Series of Poker, proving that he can still dominate years after he won his first bracelet. In one event, he finished 9th with wins reaching about $71,000. In another event, he got 9th place again where he won $73,000. Sadly, his performance was a bit lacking and he missed his chance of winning another bracelet this time. He was just a runner-up in this competition.
Carlos has come far from his beginnings in the bar in Madrid where he first learned how to play poker. It is this fact that indeed, sets him apart from other players. While most players now have learned poker from online game versions of it, tutorials, and DVDs, Carlos is among those who have learned it the old school way.
With this old school, learning became the drive to succeed and to win. Carlos' efforts have paid off since he has two bracelets and WSOP and WPT titles to his name. Truly, El Matador has conquered the poker scene and he still continues to tame even the wildest and bravest opponent.
